Random Catch-Up Notes
For someone who really wants to crack down and blog more regularly, I'm sure doing a shit job of it.
1) Thanksgiving was a-okay! We went up to Maine, hung out with Ann's brother, sister-in-law, and mother, and then spent the rest of the weekend at home. Really laid back, nothing too crazy. I think I put in roughly 8 hours on Team Fortress 2 on Saturday, alone. A good, non-busy weekend is just what we needed, especially since I don't think we have a free weekend until 2008 at this point.
2) So the New Hampshire primary is on 8 January. I look forward to the craziness. Expect heavy election blogging. Or something.
3) Two electoral notes I don't understand:
a) Why I feel like I'm falling under the spell of McCain. Now I know why voters don't vote in ways that ultimately benefit themselves - if the right guy comes along, they can easily rationalize things in their head and ignore the warts. I assume that's why Rudy Giuliani has any support, and John Edwards is a master of this sort of manipulation, but I can't say I dislike what McCain's been up to as of late. I get why he's suddenly surging. I can't support him in good conscience, but if he were to somehow grab the nomination (or the Presidency), I can't say I'd be all that angry about it, either.
b) I blame David for The Great Huckabee Adventure. Why he appeals to anyone, I don't know - there are better candidates for each issue he stands for - and when I see bloggers I respect falling for his charms (current company excluded), well, it's depressing. Very depressing.
4) I've been reading a lot more than usual lately, it feels. I can't explain why, but, for the first time in ages, the pile(s) of books to read is starting to look somewhat manageable. That doesn't mean I don't have a list 20 books long waiting to be reserved in Manchester, or that a separate text file doesn't have 30 more in it, but yeah.
5) I gave up on Reaper and Gossip Girl, we finished Tell Me You Love Me (talk about a bizarre finale on that one), and Ann's given up on Chuck even though I still really like it. Keeping in mind that I still haven't tried Bionic Woman, this means that, of all the new shows we set out to try and watch this year, the only ones both Ann and I have stuck with are Pushing Daisies and Tell Me You Love Me. I suppose that's a good thing?
6) Thoughts on Battlestar Galactica: Razor: interesting, but a) I completely missed the lesbian subplot. Like, completely. Straight over my head, and b) the "twist" at the end seemed very obvious to me. One thing for sure, though - seeing BSG again for the first time in a while was a great reminder of how superior this show is to most of the rest of the stuff I watch.
7) Sleeper music obsession of 2007? Dan Wilson's solo album. Who knew there was life after Semisonic? Anyway, I'll be compiling the relevant best-of lists sooner rather than later, and this has really been a disappointing year for music altogether, I feel. That only 3 or 4 albums really leapt out and grabbed me isn't really a good thing, I suppose.
8) Assassin's Creed is awesome, and not just because Kristen Bell is in it. I'd play it more if TF2 wasn't owning my soul, but you have to be in the right mindset to get all backstabby all the time. I also enjoy Beautiful Katamari, although it, like other Katamari games, is too short. Props to Kevin for some hookups arriving later this week. And I still like Super Mario Galaxy, but, for the first time in ages, I have too many games I want to play and not enough time to play them. Kind of neat.
I think that covers everything for now.
