| Concert Review: Jay Bennett & Ed Burch/Dolly Varden |

Went to TT the Bear's in Cambridge tonight to see Jay Bennett & company...
1) Showed up at about 8:45, TTs is dead. I walk over to the bar area, and Jay, Ed, and a bunch of other people are watching the Michael Jackson special. There is nothing more surreal than watching rock stars make fun of Michael Jackson, really.
2) First up was Dolly Varden. Well, 2 members of Dolly Varden. It was a really fun, pleasant set, they're pretty good alt-country type stuff, played primarily acoustic tonight. I talked to the lead guy a little afterwards, bought a CD, all was well.
3) Then came Jay and Ed. Wow, what a set. They played about a dozen songs, 6 "new" ones and the rest were things that the audience knew. The "new" songs were quite good, the best being "The Palace at 4am." They also played the best stuff from the album as is, including "Venus Stopped the Train," which was absolutely haunting. Excellent set.
4) I also got to talk to Jay really quick. Apparently, I'm the third person on the tour to tell him Elizabeth Elmore from the Reputation says hi.
